“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”
Walk & Talk Therapy is a unique form of therapy that combines physical activity with individual psychotherapy that can propel you forward (literally and figuratively!) Here are some of the benefits:
Physical activity releases endorphins that trigger positive feelings, helping to reduce levels of depression and anxiety.
Being in nature helps people feel more present and grounded, helping to restore a stronger mind-body connection
Walking stimulates both sides of the brain, helping to facilitate emotional processing
*Parents, bring your babies in a stroller! Pet parents, bring your pets on a leash!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Is Walk & Talk Therapy Right for me?
This type of therapy is not appropriate for processing trauma or working through intense emotion. It is also not appropriate if you have a medical condition that prevents you from engaging in an extended length of physical activity.
What can I expect from session?
We will meet at a set location and start to walk side by side and work on processing whatever comes to mind for you in context of your overall goals for therapy—just as if we were sitting inside an office. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as we will be walking for 50 minutes. We will walk at a leisurely pace. I am naturally a slow walker, but we will get into a rhythm and find what is most comfortable for you!
Will we always meet outdoors?
No, the first session is conducted in my office. This session is a bit different since I will be gathering a lot of background information, you will be filling out some paperwork, and we will be setting goals for therapy.
If you decide you would like to meet in office every other session, or once a month, we can definitely schedule that. You can always choose what type of session you would like to engage in.
Where do we meet?
We will set the location prior to meeting for session. I will give you suggestions of various parks or trails, and I am open to your suggestions as well. Ideally, it is not a strenuous hike but rather a place we can walk at a leisurely pace.
What about confidentiality?
I will always maintain your confidentiality. However, because we are out in the community, I cannot guarantee that someone will not see us or overhear us. I will remain very alert of our surroundings, and guide you to a more private area if necessary. If we run into someone you know, I will follow your lead. I will never compromise your confidentiality. It is up to you to acknowledge me as your therapist or say that I am a friend. To the public, we will just look like two people walking and talking and no one will be able to tell we are having a psychotherapy session.
